The USS Gerald Ford Aircraft Carrier: A Floating Military Base Arrives in Britain

International Military – The world’s largest aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R Ford, has docked in British. The US giant ship is so large it cannot enter Portsmouth Harbor and must dock in Stokes Bay, off the coast of Gosport, on Monday. The 100,000 ton giant ship is described as dwarfing everything in its path as it sails the Solent.

Compared to British HMS Queen Elizabeth’s “Big Lizzie”, the USS Gerald R.Ford was almost 40,000 tonnes heavier in terms of weight. With a flight deck longer than 13 tennis courts and a crew of more than 4,000 soldiers, the ship is the equivalent of a floating military base.

The USS Gerald R.Ford is stocked with over 70 fighter planes. Photographs published by British media showed a group of men playing golf with a giant aircraft carrier in the distance. In another shot, a tiny police boat looks minuscule beside the imposing giant USS Gerald R.Ford.

A 25 deck nuclear powered war machine twice the size of the Titanic entered British waters after serving with NATO forces in the North Atlantic. He joined six NATO allies for the Silent Wolverine war games in the East Atlantic Ocean, November 8, 2022.

Quoting a press statement on the US Navy website, Tuesday (11/15/2022), Silent Wolverine tests the capabilities of first-class aircraft carriers through integrated high-class Navy war scenarios with participating NATO allies. Participants in the war games include Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain and the United States.

“The challenges of the future are upon us here and now. Silent Wolverine demonstrates our commitment to deepening interoperability with our allies and partners, while testing the cutting edge warfighting capabilities of the Ford class carriers in a highly relevant operational environment,” said Adm.Stuart B.Munsch, commander of Naval Forces Europe and Africa.

USS Gerald R.Ford at a glance This ship is named after the 38th President of the USS Gerald R.Ford who served from 1974 to 1977 and previously served in the US Navy. USS Gerald R.Ford sailed from Norfolk, Virginia in October and was deployed alongside NATO allies in the Atlantic on a mission involving 9,000 personnel from nine nations, 20 ships and 60 aircraft.

It is the first new aircraft carrier designed in more than 40 years according to the US Navy, with the capability to carry more than 75 aircraft and travel at speeds in excess of 30 knots (34.5 miles per hour).

The termination of her deployment comes just days after HMS Queen Elizabeth sailed to take part in Operation Achillean which patrolled European waters with a carrier strike group. This giant ship will be anchored in the Solent for four days. The USS Thomas Hudner and SPS Alvaro de Bazan also arrived at the Portsmouth Naval base yesterday morning.
